Telangana raises concerns over proposed VB-G RAM G Act

Hyderabad: A Cabinet sub-committee constituted by the Telangana government raised concerns over the proposed VB-G RAM G Act.

The committee said the legislation could affect rural communities and State interests.

The panel held its first meeting under the chairmanship of Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy.

Members discussed the proposed law and examined its implications for Telangana.

They noted that the Centre plans to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from July 1.

The committee expressed concern that some provisions could weaken safeguards available to vulnerable rural communities.

VB-G RAM G Act may increase burden on States

Meanwhile, members observed that certain provisions could reduce the role of State governments in employment guarantee programmes.

They also noted that the proposed framework could increase financial liabilities on States.

Additionally, the committee reviewed concerns raised by several non-BJP ruled States.

Some northeastern States have also expressed reservations about the proposal.

Members pointed out that States such as Himachal Pradesh have not accepted the framework so far.

The committee is expected to recommend amendments to protect workers and self-help groups.

It also plans to safeguard rural households and small farmers.

Further, the panel is likely to seek flexibility for States in designing programmes that suit local conditions.

The members decided to communicate Telangana’s concerns and recommendations to the Union government after finalising the report.

Uttam Kumar Reddy also criticised the proposal to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the programme.

He described the move as unnecessary and unfortunate.

The minister noted that several farmers’ and labour organisations across the country have opposed the proposal.
