Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly session beginning Monday was set for a sharp political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the main opposition BRS. Both parties prepared to clash over the government’s performance, electoral promises and several proposed legislative measures.
The Congress government entered the session after marking its first 1,000 days in office. It planned to highlight its record through major welfare programmes and other initiatives.
The government’s performance pitch included crop loan waivers, job recruitments and fine rice distribution. It also planned to highlight the Indiramma housing programme. Meanwhile, the BRS prepared to challenge the government over its implementation of promises made before the 2023 Assembly elections.
The opposition party had organised protests across the State and released a comprehensive “chargesheet” against the Congress administration. BRS legislators planned to raise several issues during the proceedings.
Telangana Assembly session puts welfare record under focus
The Congress government prepared to counter the BRS attack by presenting details of its welfare and development initiatives.
Ministers planned to cite crop loan waivers and Indiramma houses as evidence of the administration’s performance. Additionally, the government intended to highlight recruitments and fine rice distribution.
The BRS, however, planned to focus on what it described as failures to implement the Congress party’s 2023 electoral commitments. Therefore, the Telangana Assembly session was expected to feature competing claims over the government’s performance during its first 1,000 days.
Ministers also prepared to answer opposition allegations concerning the 22A list. In addition, they planned detailed explanations on the merger of polytechnic colleges.
The government also prepared to introduce the Core Urban Region Infrastructure and Development Bill, or CURE-2026. The proposed legislation sought to establish integrated governance for Hyderabad and its metropolitan region.
However, some measures associated with the proposal had already attracted opposition. These included a proposed property tax increase and regulations concerning unauthorised constructions. The CURE-2026 proposal consequently added another major issue to the political confrontation expected during the session.

The government also considered tabling the Hate Speech and Hate Crimes Prevention Bill during the proceedings. Additionally, it planned to move a resolution seeking a reduction in the minimum age for contesting legislative elections.
The proposed resolution sought to ask the Centre to lower the minimum age from 25 years to 21 years. Thus, the Telangana Assembly session was set to combine a political debate over the Congress government’s record with proposed legislation and policy measures.
