Hyderabad: Telangana Government Advisor for BC Welfare and Development V. Hanumantha Rao urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to name the under-construction steel bridge between Chanchalguda Printing Press and Santosh Nagar after veteran freedom fighter Sangam Lakshmi Bai.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Hanumantha Rao proposed the name “Sangam Lakshmi Bai Bridge”. He said the move would honour the veteran freedom fighter and former parliamentarian.
Hanumantha Rao recalled Lakshmi Bai’s role in the freedom struggle. She participated in the Salt Satyagraha and the agitation against the Simon Commission and faced imprisonment.
Besides these movements, Lakshmi Bai took part in the struggle against the Nizam’s rule. She also participated in the Bhoodan movement.
Sangam Lakshmi Bai entered electoral politics after her involvement in the freedom struggle. In 1952, she won the then Alwal Assembly constituency and later served as Education Minister in the Boorgula Ramakrishna Rao Cabinet.
She subsequently represented Medak in the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms. Hanumantha Rao also highlighted her contribution to education and the welfare of poor girls.
Sangam Lakshmi Bai Bridge proposal highlights her education service
Hanumantha Rao recalled the role of Indira Sevasadan at Saidabad in Lakshmi Bai’s public service. The institution continues to provide education and hostel facilities for poor girl students.
Furthermore, the BC Welfare and Development Adviser said he had received several representations seeking the bridge’s naming after Lakshmi Bai. These requests prompted him to approach the Chief Minister.
He urged Revanth Reddy to consider the proposal and name the structure “Sangam Lakshmi Bai Bridge”. According to Hanumantha Rao, the name would recognise her contributions to the freedom movement, public life and education.
The proposed steel bridge will connect Chanchalguda Printing Press and Santosh Nagar in Hyderabad. Construction work on the structure is currently underway.
Meanwhile, Hanumantha Rao continued his appeal for official recognition of Lakshmi Bai’s legacy. He said naming the bridge after her would honour her contributions.
The request followed representations from several people seeking the proposed name. Hanumantha Rao asked the Chief Minister to consider those representations.
The letter specifically sought the name “Sangam Lakshmi Bai Bridge” for the under-construction structure. The proposed bridge connects Chanchalguda Printing Press with Santosh Nagar.
