Hyderabad: BRS MLC Sravan Dasoju called for administrative accountability and stronger action against officials over alleged protocol violations and bureaucratic apathy towards elected representatives.
Speaking at the Legislative Council Privileges Committee meeting, Sravan said MLCs did not seek ceremonial honours. However, he insisted that government officials must respond to issues raised by legislators on behalf of the public.
“If an MLC’s letter is not even acknowledged by senior officials, how can an ordinary citizen expect a response from the government?” he asked.
Sravan said democratic institutions depended on accountability and institutional respect. He urged the Privileges Committee to establish strong precedents for holding the executive machinery accountable.
The BRS MLC also asked the Council Secretariat to frame and circulate a clear operational definition of legislative privileges. He sought greater clarity on the rights and protections available to members of the Legislative Council.
Sravan further demanded equal treatment for MLCs in the allocation of Constituency Development Funds. He also sought parity between the Legislative Assembly and Council in the tabling of Bills, inquiry reports and policy documents.
Administrative accountability raised over protocol and RTI concerns
Sravan alleged that officials had violated protocol involving constitutional authorities. He also claimed that authorities had selectively excluded elected representatives from official programmes.
In addition, he raised concerns over RTI applications submitted by legislators. According to Sravan, authorities had allegedly ignored some of these applications.
The MLC also referred to an incident at Nampally Court. He alleged that police personnel obstructed him despite his identification as an MLC and practising advocate.
Sravan urged the Privileges Committee to take firm action on such complaints. He called for clear rules to ensure that the executive remained accountable to the legislature.
He said elected representatives needed responses from government officials when they raised public issues. Sravan argued that administrative institutions must remain responsive to both legislators and citizens.
The MLC reiterated that he did not seek special ceremonial treatment. Instead, he demanded institutional recognition of legislative privileges and timely administrative responses.
“Administrative institutions must be responsive and accountable for democracy to truly serve the people,” Sravan said.
The Privileges Committee meeting covered concerns related to legislative privileges, official responses, protocol and the treatment of elected representatives. Sravan sought firm action and clearer rules on these issues.
