Hyderabad: Minister for Tourism and Culture Jupally Krishna Rao said low production and import delays triggered the urea shortage in Telangana.
During Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, Jupally Krishna Rao said the central government controlled urea production and imports. Therefore, he said the State government had no authority over supply volumes, which caused shortages across several districts.
The Minister replied to a question raised by Kotha Prabhakar Reddy. However, he said the State acted within its limits to manage the urea shortage and protect farm activity during the cropping season.

Meanwhile, Jupally Krishna Rao said the government launched an application to ensure transparent urea distribution. Under the system, officials allocate fertiliser based on crop type and landholding. As a result, he said the process prevented diversion and ensured fair access. He also said the government would not allow farmers to suffer due to supply gaps.
Separately, replying to Anil Jadhav, the Minister said the State informed the Centre about problems faced by soybean farmers. Accordingly, he said the government requested procurement support through National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India.
Finally, he told the House that talks with the Centre continued on fertiliser availability and soybean procurement. Therefore, the Minister said the State pressed for timely action to ease pressure linked to the urea shortage.
