Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should introspect on his role as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, alleging that the Congress had suffered repeated electoral setbacks during his tenure.
Addressing the media, Reddy said Rahul Gandhi had completed two years as the Leader of the Opposition and claimed that the Congress had failed in most elections held during this period, except in Kerala.
Citing electoral data, the Union Minister claimed that after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 664 Assembly seats across states, including Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry, while the Congress secured 171 seats.
Reddy attributed the BJP’s electoral performance to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said people had continued to support the BJP because of what he described as governance focused on public welfare and development.
Rahul Gandhi criticism over electoral performance
The Union Minister claimed that voters had rewarded the BJP with significant political victories, including consecutive electoral successes in Assam and Haryana. He also referred to the BJP’s political gains in Bihar, West Bengal and Puducherry as evidence of growing public support for the party.
Reddy further alleged that the Congress had lost public confidence because of Rahul Gandhi’s political approach and accused him of making statements that, according to the BJP, did not reflect public aspirations.
He also criticised Rahul Gandhi’s leadership by comparing his political performance with the promotion of Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir following Operation Sindoor. Reddy further alleged that the Congress leader had failed to act as a responsible Leader of the Opposition and claimed that the country expected a more constructive opposition.
