Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Wednesday alleged that the State government and the Opposition had joined hands to protect large rice millers while targeting small mill owners.
Kavitha made the remarks after meeting a delegation of mill owners. She alleged that the government had taken no action against large boiled rice operators despite dues of nearly ₹4,000 crore.
However, she claimed authorities were filing cases and arresting small mill owners over pending dues ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore. She also alleged that the pressure had driven a woman in Karimnagar to die by suicide.
Rice millers issue dominates Kavitha’s attack
Further, Kavitha alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy had ignored the issue.
She claimed the previous BRS government had left behind 1.4 lakh tonnes of boiled rice and sold it to the Philippines at ₹48 per kg. However, she alleged the present government first floated a tender at ₹24 per kg and later attempted to sell the same stock at ₹21.70 per kg.
Kavitha further claimed that the tender had been awarded to a mill owner from Karimnagar. She also alleged that a court case relating to the rice stock was still pending.
Meanwhile, Kavitha alleged that BRS leaders K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao had remained silent because of their links with large operators. She said her party would continue to support rice millers facing difficulties and raise their concerns.
