Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar directed officials to strengthen Hyderabad road safety measures and accelerate field-level interventions to reduce road accidents and fatalities across the city.
He issued the directions during a high-level road safety review meeting held at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) in Banjara Hills on Wednesday.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Joel Davis and Hyderabad District Collector Dr. Priyanka Ala attended the meeting along with representatives from multiple government departments.
Officials reviewed accident statistics on city roads and national highways. They also examined black spots, blind spots, pedestrian accidents, drunk-driving cases, hit-and-run incidents and compensation provided to victims.
The meeting assessed accident-prone locations and discussed measures required to prevent future incidents.
Hyderabad road safety measures focus on accident-prone zones
Addressing officials, Sajjanar said all departments must work with accountability and responsibility on road safety issues.
He stressed that review meetings should result in measurable field-level action rather than remain limited to discussions.
The Police Commissioner directed officials to improve road signage, lane markings, zebra crossings and footpaths. He also called for the removal of encroachments affecting road safety.
Furthermore, he instructed authorities to strengthen central medians, increase divider heights and install guard railings to prevent unsafe road crossings.
Sajjanar also recommended the construction of foot overbridges at locations with a history of frequent accidents.
In addition, he asked officials to focus on street lighting, speed-control measures and improved traffic management systems.
He emphasised scientific planning of U-turns and free left turns. Moreover, he called for stronger enforcement of lane discipline and measures to reduce congestion.
Hyderabad road safety measures include RTC driver training
Joint Commissioner Joel Davis delivered a detailed presentation on major black spots, blind spots and accident-prone locations across Hyderabad.
He proposed measures such as foot overbridges, relocation of bus shelters and regulation of bus bays to improve safety.
District Collector Dr. Priyanka Ala said reducing road accidents and fatalities remained the primary objective.
She directed departments to submit action-taken reports within specified timelines. Additionally, she stressed the need for stronger coordination among agencies.
The meeting also recommended comprehensive training for TGSRTC drivers on road safety regulations and behavioural skills.
Officials discussed measures to prevent accidents involving RTC buses and improve overall driving standards.
Participants further examined the feasibility of establishing a dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU) to coordinate, monitor and implement road safety initiatives across departments.
Representatives from the RTA, Transport Department, TGSRTC, NHAI, Roads and Buildings Department, Health Department, GHMC, Traffic Police, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholder agencies attended the meeting.
