Hyderabad: Rajya Sabha MP and National BC Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah on Sunday led a massive protest at Indira Park Dharna Chowk. The protest demanded the implementation of 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in Telangana. The event, named “BC Reservations Nyaya Sadhana Deeksha,” drew representatives from over 60 BC community associations. Along with them, students, women, youth, employees, and legal professionals also participated.
Addressing the gathering, Krishnaiah said BCs remain under-represented in the state’s political structures. He stated that the government must submit accurate population statistics. This submission would enable courts to legally approve a 42% reservation quota.
“Courts consider reservation increases based on comprehensive data,” he said.
Former BC Commission Chairman Dr. Vakulabharanam Krishnamohan Rao, who chaired the protest, said the quota could go up to 52%. This increase is possible if the government follows standard legal procedures and submits reliable data.
Indira Park resonates with demands for enhanced BC representation
Former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya emphasised that the government bears the responsibility of enforcing the promised quota increase. BRS MLC L. Ramana demanded that upcoming elections be conducted based on the new BC reservation framework, as assured earlier.
Indira Park echoed with slogans for 42% reservation as thousands of BC community members packed the protest site. Leaders reiterated the demand for proportional representation of BCs in prestigious platforms based on their population and socio-economic standing.
