Hyderabad: Auto drivers in Hyderabad and Secunderabad have been urged to observe a one-day bandh and participate in a protest dharna at Indira Park on January 20. They are opposing the state government’s free bus travel policy for women.
Mahatma Gandhi Telangana Auto Drivers JAC convenor Mohd Amanullah Khan and ILWF Auto Bandhu Association president Inayat Ali Bagri issued the joint call on Friday. They cited long-standing grievances and financial stress faced by the auto-rickshaw community.
Free bus travel blamed for auto drivers’ losses
The leaders claimed that the introduction of free bus travel for women has severely affected the earnings of auto drivers. Raising the slogan “Sharab Hatao – Telangana Bachao,” they also demanded total prohibition in the state.
They warned that unless the government rolls back the scheme, justice for auto drivers will remain out of reach. The protest will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Indira Park.
Auto drivers across the twin cities have been asked to participate in large numbers to press for their demands. This will help make the bandh a success.
