Hyderabad: Telangana rice exports to the Philippines could increase after Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy sought larger procurement from the State during talks in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Uttam met Francisco P. Tu Laurel Jr., Secretary of Agriculture of the Republic of the Philippines and a member of the Philippine Cabinet. The two discussed opportunities to increase rice supplies from Telangana and expand bilateral agricultural trade.
Laurel’s position was equivalent to that of a Union Cabinet Minister handling agriculture and food-related matters in India. Uttam, who held the Irrigation and Food & Civil Supplies portfolios, highlighted Telangana’s position as one of India’s leading paddy-producing States.
He said the State had substantial production capacity, modern rice-milling infrastructure and the expertise needed to supply high-quality rice in large quantities. Uttam proposed that the Philippines increase its procurement of rice from Telangana.
Laurel responded positively and indicated that the Philippines would examine opportunities to source larger quantities from the State. Both sides discussed taking the proposal forward through appropriate government agencies. Recognised importers, exporters and rice millers could also participate in the process.
The discussions gained significance because the Philippines had a substantial requirement for imported rice. It was also seeking to diversify its international sources of supply. Uttam said Telangana could offer competitive prices and consistent quality. Moreover, he said the State could ensure timely deliveries.
He maintained that these advantages could help Telangana develop into a reliable long-term rice supplier to the Philippines.
Telangana rice exports roadmap to cover standards
The meeting covered several requirements that would determine how the proposed trade arrangement could progress. The discussions included rice varieties, quality standards, pricing and procurement mechanisms. Logistics and certification procedures were also examined.
In addition, both sides discussed sanitary and phytosanitary requirements connected with agricultural trade. They agreed that officials and industry representatives should examine these issues further.
The exercise would help prepare a practical roadmap for converting the discussions into concrete trade opportunities. The Telangana rice exports proposal would therefore require coordination between government authorities and private-sector participants before larger supplies could begin.
Philippines also shows interest in meat, seeds
Laurel also expressed interest in procuring meat products and quality seeds from Telangana. Uttam welcomed the proposal and highlighted the State’s capabilities in seed production. He also cited its strengths in food processing and allied agricultural sectors.
The available product categories would be examined in consultation with the relevant authorities, he said. Regulatory requirements would also require examination. Private-sector representatives could participate in discussions on potential supplies.
Uttam said expanded agricultural trade could create new opportunities across Telangana’s rural economy. Higher Telangana rice exports could benefit farmers and rice millers, while broader agricultural trade could support seed companies and food-processing industries.
He said other stakeholders connected with agriculture and the rural economy could also benefit from increased export opportunities.
