Hyderabad: Congress MLA Shankar remarks against former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao triggered a political controversy, with the BRS demanding legal action and an unconditional apology.
Congress MLA Veerlapalli Shankar allegedly made objectionable comments targeting KCR, the BRS president and former Telangana Chief Minister. Shankar reportedly said they would not merely beat 1,000 drums but would even beat the “death drum” if necessary.
He also allegedly said they wanted KCR to die and were wishing for his death. Furthermore, the Congress MLA described KCR as a “curse” on Telangana. He also allegedly used derogatory and objectionable language while attacking the former Chief Minister.
Congress MLA Shankar remarks draw BRS criticism
BRS leaders and supporters strongly criticised Shankar over the alleged comments. They questioned how a public representative could make such remarks against a senior political leader and former Chief Minister.
The Congress MLA Shankar remarks also drew concern from Opposition leaders and democratic activists. They said elected representatives should focus on issues affecting people rather than make statements that could be interpreted as threatening an individual’s life.
They also accused Shankar of displaying a vindictive attitude through his alleged comments. The controversy subsequently intensified as the BRS sought immediate legal action against the Congress legislator.
Congress MLA Shankar remarks prompt apology demand
The BRS alleged that Shankar’s remarks could affect peace and law and order in Telangana. Therefore, the party demanded that authorities initiate legal action against him over the alleged statements.
The BRS also called on Shankar to tender an unconditional public apology. The Congress MLA Shankar remarks became the latest flashpoint between the ruling Congress and the Opposition BRS in Telangana.
