Ponnam Prabhakar challenges BJP leaders to debate on Warangal development

Hyderabad: Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday challenged BJP leaders to a public Warangal development debate, asking them to explain the Centre’s contribution to the city’s progress before criticising the state government.

In a post on X, the minister accused BJP leaders of making misleading claims about Warangal’s development. He said the party’s newly elected national president was commenting without understanding the facts.

Ponnam Prabhakar said the authority to approve the proposed Warangal airport rested with the Centre. He stated that the Telangana government had already handed over the required land and claimed that the airport project gathered momentum only after the Congress assumed office. He questioned why the project had not progressed during the decade when the BJP ruled at the Centre and the BRS governed Telangana.

Warangal development debate centres on infrastructure

The minister said the state government was investing heavily in urban infrastructure through the Urban Challenge Fund. He added that underground drainage works worth around Rs.5,000 crore had begun in Hanumakonda and Kazipet.

According to Ponnam Prabhakar, the Congress government aimed to develop Warangal as Telangana’s second major growth centre after Hyderabad.

He also criticised the BJP over the implementation of the Smart City Mission. He questioned why the Centre had not acted over alleged irregularities despite being in power for the past 10 years. He further asked why Smart City funds had reached a stage where they risked lapsing.

Warangal development debate extends to fertilisers and central funds

Ponnam Prabhakar also criticised Union Minister Bandi Sanjay’s remarks on municipal politics. He alleged that claiming the BJP would secure the mayor’s post without a majority in the municipal corporation misled the public.

The minister further accused the BJP of distorting facts on fertiliser supply. He said the Centre manufactured and allocated fertilisers to states, while the Telangana government distributed them to farmers. He alleged that the Centre had discriminated against Telangana in the allocation of fertilisers and funds.

He also claimed Telangana received only Rs.3 back for every Rs.10 contributed to the Centre. He said the Chief Minister and state ministers had repeatedly visited New Delhi seeking the state’s dues, but the Centre had not responded.

Ponnam Prabhakar invited Union Ministers Bandi Sanjay and G. Kishan Reddy, as well as the BJP national president, to participate in an open public debate. He said the discussion should focus on the BJP’s contribution to Telangana and Warangal’s development.
