KTR recalls Kalyana Lakshmi’s origins as scheme completes 12 years

Hyderabad: Kalyana Lakshmi completed 12 years, with BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao recalling the circumstances that led to its launch. KTR said the programme aimed to support poor families facing financial difficulties during their daughters’ marriages.

In a post on X, KTR recalled an incident from the Telangana movement involving a tribal family that struggled to arrange their daughter’s marriage. He said the experience prompted former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao to introduce the welfare programme.

KTR said Chandrashekar Rao had witnessed the difficulties faced by Banothu Kima Naik, who had lost the money saved for his daughter’s wedding. According to KTR, the former Chief Minister responded by helping the family.

KTR said the government later introduced Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak to support families across Telangana. He described the schemes as part of the welfare measures introduced during the previous BRS government.

Meanwhile, KTR extended greetings to beneficiaries as the scheme completed 12 years. He said the programme reflected what he described as Chandrashekar Rao’s approach to welfare and support for economically weaker families.

KTR also said the scheme sought to prevent parents from falling into debt while arranging marriages for their daughters. He described Chandrashekar Rao as a source of support for families during such occasions.

Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak began in 2014 to provide financial assistance for marriages. The programmes initially targeted SC, ST and minority families. Later, the government extended them to BC and EBC categories.

According to recent figures, the two schemes had recorded 16,78,347 beneficiaries over 12 years. Government expenditure on the programmes had reached ₹16,375.87 crore.
