Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao alleged that the Congress government’s Musi River project would lead to large-scale displacement of poor and middle-class families. Addressing a party workers’ meeting in Rajendranagar on Sunday, he claimed the project was causing destruction in the name of development.
KTR said opposition to the project had come from several quarters, including Tushar Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Despite such objections, he alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was continuing with plans that would result in the displacement of thousands of families.
The BRS leader also criticised the Chief Minister’s proposal to install a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. He alleged that a government committed to Gandhi’s ideals should not proceed with demolitions that affect residents living along the Musi River corridor.
KTR further claimed that families facing displacement, including children, had appealed to the government to protect their homes. However, he alleged that the administration had not responded to those concerns.
Musi project allegations dominate Rajendranagar meeting
During his speech, KTR accused the BJP of supporting the Congress government’s actions related to the Musi project. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, he alleged that both parties were working together on land acquisition and demolition measures connected to the project.
He questioned why the Centre had not intervened if it was concerned about the welfare of affected residents. In addition, he alleged that BJP leaders in Telangana were publicly opposing the project while approvals for related actions continued.
The BRS working president also questioned the government’s financial priorities. He said the Congress government had cited a shortage of funds for implementing election promises but was prepared to spend ₹1.5 lakh crore on the Musi project.
KTR alleged that the proposed expenditure was aimed at generating commissions and claimed the funds should instead be used to fulfil promises made to voters. He described the Congress government’s performance as disappointing and said people across Telangana were looking for political change.
