Hyderabad: Konda Surekha Congress tensions widened after her daughter publicly criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, pushing a family-linked controversy into a larger party dispute.
Surekha continued as Telangana Minister for Environment and Forests and Endowments. She also represented Warangal East as a Congress MLA. However, repeated controversies and disputes with Congress leaders had increased pressure on her political position within the ruling party.
The latest confrontation followed remarks by her daughter, Konda Sushmitha Patel, against Revanth Reddy. The Congress disciplinary committee subsequently sought an explanation from Surekha.
The committee raised concerns over the implications of repeated political statements by Sushmitha for party discipline. Surekha maintained that she could not be held responsible for statements made by her adult daughter.
The matter also reached the Congress national leadership. Surekha met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Bengaluru and reportedly explained her position. Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy said the party’s disciplinary mechanism would examine the matter and take a decision.
Konda Surekha Congress tensions rooted in Warangal
The latest dispute followed longstanding factional differences within the Congress organisation in the erstwhile Warangal district.
The Konda family had maintained a significant political presence in the region for decades. Surekha had won Assembly elections multiple times and built a political network with her husband, former MLC Konda Murali.
However, their political influence had repeatedly brought them into conflict with other Congress leaders. Their principal political differences involved Warangal West MLA Naini Rajender Reddy and other Congress leaders in the region.
Disputes had emerged over party organisation, temple board appointments, development works and political influence. The Bhadrakali Temple Trust Board controversy highlighted those differences. As Endowments Minister, Surekha asserted her authority over appointments to the board.
However, rival Congress leaders objected to decisions they described as unilateral. Surekha, in turn, accused some critics of attempting to undermine her authority.
Differences also surfaced over works associated with the Medaram Jatara. Major works were transferred from the Endowments Department to the Roads and Buildings Department.
The move was viewed in political circles as another indication of the contest over administrative influence. Consequently, the latest Konda Surekha Congress confrontation emerged against an existing struggle for political control in Warangal.
Earlier controversies added pressure on Surekha
Surekha had also faced criticism over several public controversies. In 2024, she made controversial allegations involving BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao and actors Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Naga Chaitanya.
Her remarks linked KTR to the actors’ divorce. Surekha later withdrew the remarks and apologised. However, the episode created political and legal complications while drawing criticism towards the Congress government.
Another controversy followed Surekha’s remarks about ministers receiving money for clearing files. She said she instead encouraged companies to make contributions through corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Later, Surekha clarified that her remarks had been misinterpreted. She said the comments referred to alleged corruption during the previous BRS government. Such controversies repeatedly forced the minister to issue clarifications or withdraw remarks after political criticism.
Sushmitha’s political role adds another dimension
The latest dispute also gained significance because Sushmitha had shown an increasing interest in electoral politics. Reports had earlier indicated that she projected herself as a prospective candidate from the Parakala Assembly constituency.
Congress leaders objected to individuals announcing their candidature independently. They maintained that the party selected candidates through its organisational process. Sushmitha’s political ambitions therefore added another dimension to the dispute involving her mother.
The issue extended beyond Surekha’s cabinet position to the Konda family’s efforts to retain and potentially expand its political influence. Any future political role for Sushmitha could consequently affect the family’s relationship with the state Congress leadership.
Konda Surekha Congress dispute poses challenge for Revanth
The confrontation also presented a political challenge for Revanth Reddy. Repeated criticism of a Chief Minister by a minister’s family member could raise questions about internal discipline and the authority of the government.
At the same time, action against Surekha could deepen factional divisions in Warangal. Surekha remained an experienced, multiple-time MLA and a prominent woman leader with an established regional political network.
Any move against her could therefore produce a wider confrontation involving her supporters and political rivals. Opposition parties, including the BRS and BJP, could also seek political advantage from divisions within the ruling Congress.
The dispute involved several competing interests. Revanth sought to consolidate his authority within the Telangana Congress, while the Konda family sought to retain its regional influence.
Meanwhile, rival Warangal Congress leaders sought greater influence over the local organisation. The AICC leadership faced the task of preventing those differences from developing into a wider public confrontation.
Sushmitha’s remarks brought these competing political interests into sharper focus. No confirmed announcement had been made on Surekha’s removal from the Cabinet or her resignation. Therefore, speculation over her immediate ministerial future remained separate from the confirmed disciplinary proceedings.
Surekha retained her Assembly seat, ministerial position, political experience and regional network. However, repeated controversies and factional conflicts had increased political pressure around her.
The Congress disciplinary process continued, while the issue had also reached the party’s national leadership. Any warning or compromise could allow Surekha and the state leadership to avoid an immediate rupture. However, unresolved factional differences in Warangal could continue to create friction.
Removal from the Cabinet without further disciplinary action could reduce her administrative influence while leaving her within the Congress. A complete political break, however, could significantly alter Congress equations in Warangal.
Sushmitha’s future political role would also remain important. Any disagreement over her electoral ambitions could further affect relations between the Konda family and the Congress leadership.
The Konda Surekha Congress dispute had therefore developed beyond a controversy over one statement. It had become part of a wider contest involving party discipline, regional influence and political control in Warangal.
