Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said Hyderabad cyber frauds are causing losses of nearly ₹1 crore every day and called for coordinated action by banks, telecom operators, regulators and law enforcement agencies to dismantle cybercrime networks.
Speaking at the National Round Table on Digital Trust & Citizen Protection, organised by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) in association with Hyderabad City Police on Friday, Sajjanar described mule bank accounts and ghost SIM cards as the backbone of cybercrime. He urged all stakeholders to work together to eliminate them and strengthen the digital ecosystem.
The Police Commissioner said the country should aspire to reach a stage where banks can confidently declare they have no mule accounts. He also urged citizens to report cyber frauds immediately through the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930, stating that complaints lodged during the “golden hour” significantly improve the chances of freezing transactions and recovering stolen money.
“The most effective weapon against cybercrime is awareness. Every citizen should resolve not to fall prey to cyber fraudsters. We need to address these issues holistically. Law enforcement agencies, banks, telecom companies, technology providers, educational institutions, industry bodies and citizens must work together to build a secure digital ecosystem,” Sajjanar said.
Hyderabad cyber frauds dominate digital trust discussions
More than 200 participants from law enforcement, banking, cybersecurity, telecom and legal sectors attended the conference. The discussions focused on fear-driven and greed-driven digital scams, banking frauds, artificial intelligence-enabled scams, deepfakes, emerging cyber threats and regulatory reforms.
A citizens’ handbook titled “Digital Fraud Awareness and Prevention” was released during the event.
FTCCI President R. Ravi Kumar called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to improve digital safety. The chamber also announced that it would publish a white paper based on the recommendations made during the round table and organise regular cyber awareness programmes.
