Centre approves additional rice procurement from Telangana

Hyderabad: The Centre approved additional rice procurement of 8 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) from Telangana for the Rabi marketing season. As a result, the state’s rice procurement target increased from 35 LMT to 43 LMT.

Meanwhile, Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar welcomed the decision. They said the higher procurement target would protect the interests of Telangana’s farmers.

Additional rice procurement target raised to 43 LMT

According to Kishan Reddy, the Centre acted after receiving representations from BJP public representatives in Telangana. Earlier, the Union government and the Telangana government had agreed to procure 35 LMT of rice, equivalent to 52 LMT of paddy, before the Kharif Marketing Season 2025–26.

With paddy production expected to increase this season, BJP MPs and MLAs from Telangana met Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi on July 8. They urged him to enhance the procurement target for the state.

Following the request, the Centre raised the procurement target to 43 LMT of rice, equivalent to 64 LMT of paddy. Finally, Kishan Reddy urged the Telangana government to make full use of the additional allocation so that farmers receive the intended benefits.
