Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) accused the Congress government of pushing Telangana’s agriculture into crisis and alleged that more than 1,000 farmers had died by suicide during the last 31 months.
In a statement released on social media, the opposition party claimed the government had failed to provide crop loss compensation and had not given clear directions on crop procurement. It also alleged that farmer welfare programmes worth ₹28,000 crore had been weakened during the Congress government’s tenure.
The BRS further claimed that falling agricultural land prices had affected farmers’ confidence. According to the party, mounting debt and inadequate financial support had left many cultivators under severe economic stress.
Farmer suicides claims dominate BRS attack
The opposition party alleged that the Congress government had decided to discontinue farmer insurance from this year. It also claimed that the state had reversed the agricultural progress achieved after Telangana’s formation.
The BRS contrasted the current administration with its own tenure, claiming that investment support, irrigation, uninterrupted power supply, seeds and fertilisers had strengthened agriculture and improved farmers’ livelihoods. It argued that those welfare measures had reduced financial distress among cultivators.
The Congress government had not responded to the BRS allegations at the time of publication. News reports based on the party’s statement could not independently verify the claims made in the social media post.
