BC reservations bill pending, government must act: Kavitha

Hyderabad: The continued delay in clearing the BC reservations bill for Telangana local bodies has drawn sharp concern from Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who said the government must act without further delay.

Speaking to the national media on Wednesday, Kavitha said the bill had remained pending with the President for over a year. She said the Congress-led state government could not afford inaction, especially with municipal elections approaching.

Kavitha said the state government was preparing to hold municipal elections soon. She stressed that it must protect the interests of the state’s 52 percent BC population.

She said the government must clearly spell out the reservation framework before announcing election schedules. Any delay, she warned, would affect democratic representation in local bodies.

BC reservations bill delay violates BC rights, says Kavitha

Kavitha urged the state government to take an all-party delegation to Delhi to secure early approval of the BC reservations bill. She also suggested filing a petition in the Supreme Court due to the prolonged pendency.

She said keeping the bill pending for over a year violated the rights of BC communities. Kavitha called on the government to pursue a legal course instead of allowing further delay.

She reminded the government that it bore responsibility for resolving the issue before municipal elections. Failure to do so, she said, would harm backward class representation.
