Hyderabad: ANPR cameras will strengthen transport surveillance and help detect traffic violations across Telangana, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said on Tuesday.
The Transport Department has initiated steps to install 60 Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras across the State. In addition, the government has planned to use Artificial Intelligence technology to make surveillance more effective.
Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, Ponnam Prabhakar outlined several measures taken to strengthen the Transport Department. He said the department had appointed 113 Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors, 50 constables, 20 junior assistants and four Motor Vehicle Inspectors.
Meanwhile, the department has abolished check-posts to prevent harassment. At the same time, enforcement teams have been strengthened across the districts.
The proposed ANPR cameras will support the department’s efforts to improve enforcement and surveillance. In addition, the government has formulated a plan to use AI technology for smarter monitoring of the transport system.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC). He said the RTC served as a lifeline for poor and middle-class sections of society.
ANPR cameras and AI to improve transport monitoring
Ponnam Prabhakar compared the RTC’s role in Telangana with that of the Railways across the country. He said public transport played a significant role in people’s daily lives.
The Minister also appreciated the efforts of RTC drivers, conductors and other employees. Their work, he said, was helping the corporation move towards becoming one of the country’s leading public transport organisations.
Furthermore, Ponnam Prabhakar said the government was providing the funds required by the Transport Department. He attributed this support to the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka.
The government, he said, remained committed to strengthening the RTC. At the same time, he stressed the importance of employee commitment, efficient administration and supportive government policies.
Therefore, Ponnam Prabhakar expressed confidence that the RTC could become the country’s No. 1 public transport organisation in the future.
The Transport Department will also continue preparations to expand surveillance through ANPR cameras and AI-based technology.
Special Chief Secretary (Transport) Vikas Raj, TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy, Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, JTC Chandrasekhar Goud and other officials participated in the meeting.
