Uttam hails paddy procurement success, sets June first-week deadline

Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Monday hailed the success of the state’s paddy procurement drive and directed officials to complete the process by the first week of June.

During inspections at procurement centres in Thirumalagiri and Phanigiri in Suryapet district, the minister reviewed purchases, stock lifting, transport arrangements and payments to farmers.

He said Telangana had procured nearly 64 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of paddy through 8,575 procurement centres across the state.

According to the minister, large quantities of paddy had already reached rice mills. As a result, pressure on procurement centres had eased significantly.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said the government remained committed to purchasing every grain produced by farmers.

Additionally, he said authorities were procuring rain-soaked paddy at the Minimum Support Price to protect farmers from losses.

The minister directed officials to complete procurement operations in Suryapet district by the end of the first week of June.

Meanwhile, he said the government had issued similar instructions to officials in Nalgonda district.

Uttam Kumar Reddy praised district collectors, MLAs and Civil Supplies officials for ensuring smooth procurement operations.

He said the government had already credited Rs 11,500 crore directly into the accounts of 9.31 lakh farmers.

Furthermore, he said farmers were now receiving payments within 48 to 72 hours.

Unlike in the past, they no longer had to wait for weeks or months to receive payments.

To address transport shortages, the government directed officials to deploy all available lorries and heavy vehicles for paddy movement.

The minister also criticised the Centre’s procurement policy. He said Telangana was prepared to procure up to 75 LMT, while the Union government had agreed to purchase only around 51 LMT.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said Telangana had emerged as the country’s leading rice-producing state.

Moreover, he said the state accounted for nearly 63 per cent of India’s Yasangi paddy procurement.

The minister expressed confidence that the remaining paddy procurement operations would conclude on schedule and that all stocks would be moved to rice mills.
