Jupally launches conservation works at Phanigiri, announces Rs 5 crore package

Hyderabad: Tourism, Culture and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao launched Phanigiri conservation works and announced Rs 5 crore for the comprehensive development of the historic Buddhist site in Suryapet district.

The minister laid the foundation stone for conservation and restoration works at the Phanigiri and Gajulabanda Buddhist sites along with MLA Mandula Samuel.

The projects will be executed with CSR funds from Telangana GENCO’s Yadadri Thermal Power Station.

Authorities will spend Rs 1.60 crore on preserving the Buddhist structures at Phanigiri.

They will also utilise Rs 23 lakh for conservation works at Gajulabanda.

Jupally Krishna Rao said the government is committed to protecting Telangana’s ancient Buddhist heritage.

Phanigiri conservation works aim to boost heritage tourism

Meanwhile, the minister described Phanigiri as one of the most significant Buddhist centres in South India.

He said Buddhism symbolises peace, non-violence and human values.

Therefore, preserving such heritage for future generations remains a government priority.

Jupally Krishna Rao said Telangana is taking steps to strengthen its position on the national and international Buddhist tourism map.

He noted that Phanigiri and Gajulabanda hold immense historical importance.

The minister said sculptures, inscriptions and coins discovered during excavations showcase Telangana’s rich past.

He added that heritage tourism would create employment opportunities for local youth.

It would also contribute to rural economic growth.

Responding to a request from MLA Mandula Samuel, the minister sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the site’s overall development.

The funds will support the construction of an approach road from the main highway.

Authorities will also build a stairway leading to the hilltop monument.

In addition, they will create tourism infrastructure and improve visitor facilities.

District Collector Tejas Nandalal Pawar, SP Narasimha, Archaeology Department Director Arjun Rao and other officials attended the programme.
