Hyderabad: A three-hour downpour on Friday afternoon threw Hyderabad into chaos, crippling traffic, flooding homes, and cutting power across swathes of the city.
As monsoon currents intensified, Greater Hyderabad witnessed heavy rain from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., overwhelming stormwater drains. With schools and offices closing simultaneously, thousands of vehicles hit waterlogged roads, leading to hours-long snarls. School buses, vans, and autos ferrying children were stranded knee-deep in floodwater, triggering panic among parents. Office-goers and commuters were caught in tailbacks across the city.
Water entered homes in several low-lying areas. Patny Nala in Secunderabad overflowed, submerging Paigah Colony. DRF teams evacuated residents by boat. In Masab Tank, Hitech City, Ayyappa Society, Gajularamaram, Kukatpally, and Hafeezpet, stormwater surged through residential areas. Maitrivanam and Bhavani Nagar roads turned into waist-deep pools. At Nectar Gardens in Madhapur, streets disappeared under sheets of rainwater.
The GHMC head office was not spared—rainwater entered the inward section, damaging computers, and later leaked from the ceiling to the ground floor, causing concern among staff.
Electricity supply to 270 feeders was disrupted, including in Ameerpet, Mehdipatnam, Malakpet, Habsiguda, and Ramnagar, where transformer failures stalled restoration. In Banjara Hills, trees fell on power lines in Yellareddyguda, delaying repairs, CMD Musharraf Farooqui said.
The IT corridor was paralyzed. Vehicles remained static for over two hours on key roads in Madhapur, Hitech City, IKEA, AMB, Inorbit Mall, Kothaguda, Gachibowli, Rayadurgam, Kondapur, Lingampally, and Nanakramguda.
In Nadergul, a woman identified as Ramavath Lakshmi, 35, died after a wall collapsed on her hut during the rain. No major incidents of tree or electric pole collapse were reported due to absence of strong winds. In Amberpet’s Vaibhav Nagar Colony, a car was washed away in floodwater.
Patny in Secunderabad recorded 11.5 cm of rain, followed by 12 cm in Bowenpally, 10 cm in Nacharam, and 9.8 cm in Moosarambagh, as per TGDPS. Madhuranagar, Vanasthalipuram, A.S. Rao Nagar, and Hayathnagar reported lower rainfall at around 1 cm.
The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for the next 48 hours, forecasting thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light to heavy rain across multiple parts of Greater Hyderabad.
