Temple spending row: BRS MLC questions Rs 700 crore allocation

Hyderabad: The Temple spending row intensified after BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan criticised the state government over its decision to allocate Rs 700 crore for temple construction while key public sectors remained underfunded.

Addressing the issue on Saturday, Sravan alleged that devotion was being used to mask “greed-driven politics.” He questioned the rationale behind prioritising religious infrastructure when government schools continued to face severe financial shortages.

He stated that children from poor families studied in these schools, yet basic funding remained inadequate. Therefore, he asked the government to clearly explain its priorities in the ongoing Temple spending row.

Temple spending row highlights funding imbalance

Sravan pointed to what he described as a “disturbing imbalance” in government spending. He said sectors such as education and healthcare were being neglected despite their critical importance.

Moreover, he alleged that the temple construction initiative could be linked to a real estate motive. According to him, public funds were being diverted while “hundreds of crores are looted.”

He further questioned whether the expenditure reflected genuine devotion or vested interests targeting temple lands and assets. Consequently, he said such doubts were now widely discussed among the public.

Temple spending row sparks political attack

Continuing his criticism, Sravan accused the government of engaging in “spiritual politics” to divert public attention from governance failures.

He urged the administration to come clean on its spending priorities. In addition, he called for adequate allocation of funds to education and healthcare sectors, especially those serving economically weaker sections.

The Temple spending has since added to the political confrontation between the opposition BRS and the ruling Congress government, with demands growing for greater transparency in public expenditure.
