Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro takeover moved closer after the Telangana Assembly passed a resolution supporting the state government’s decision to acquire Metro Phase I from private management.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy tabled the resolution in the Assembly on Saturday. Subsequently, the House endorsed it, giving formal backing to the Hyderabad Metro takeover proposal.
Speaking in the House, Revanth Reddy urged the Central government to extend cooperation for the expansion of the metro network in Hyderabad. He stressed that coordinated support would be crucial for future phases.
The resolution stated that the government had reviewed public demand and operational challenges before deciding on the Hyderabad Metro takeover. It noted that expansion into the Hyderabad Core Urban Region (HCUR) had become necessary in the public interest.
Hyderabad Metro takeover tied to expansion plans
The government outlined that the existing Metro Phase I covers 69 kilometres and is currently under private management. However, it highlighted technical, legal and operational constraints in extending the network under the same model.
Therefore, the Hyderabad Metro takeover was proposed to streamline expansion under direct government control. The Assembly noted that such a move would help address hurdles faced in planning future corridors.
Proposals for Phase II(A), spanning 76.4 kilometres, and Phase II(B), spanning 86.1 kilometres, have already been submitted to the Centre. These expansions form a key part of the broader Hyderabad Metro takeover strategy.
Moreover, the resolution emphasised that Phase II would be executed as a government project with joint participation from the Centre and the state.
Hyderabad Metro takeover gets full Assembly backing
The Assembly expressed full support for the state government’s decision to initiate the Metro takeover process. It also urged the government to expedite efforts to secure Central approval for Phase II expansion.
Additionally, the House acknowledged the “special circumstances” surrounding the metro’s expansion. It called on the state to actively pursue clearances and ensure timely implementation of the project.
The Hyderabad Metro takeover resolution marks a significant administrative step. It signals a shift from private to public control for Phase I while laying the groundwork for a large-scale expansion of the network.
