Telangana plans special officers for senior citizens welfare

Hyderabad: Telangana decided to name special officers in each district for senior citizens welfare. Social Welfare Minister Adluri Lakshman Kumar announced the move. He spoke on Thursday.

He said the officers would guard the rights of older people. They would also hear their complaints. The minister spoke at the state-level International Day of Older Persons event. The programme took place at Ravindra Bharathi.

BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also attended. Lakshman Kumar said the state remained focused on older people. He said each district needed a clear point of contact. The new officers would fill that role. In addition, they would help people raise complaints.

He also spoke about current care services. The state had 30 day-care centres for senior citizens. According to the minister, the centres gave free food. They also offered health care and recreation.

Senior citizens welfare gets district-level support

Lakshman Kumar said the state was taking more steps for senior citizens welfare. These included legal and official measures. He said the steps aimed to improve care. They also sought to protect the rights of older people.

Further, the minister spoke about family responsibility. He said families should take greater care of elderly members. The state was also working on financial safety for senior citizens. Lakshman Kumar said such support remained important.

Meanwhile, the day-care centres continued to meet basic needs. They gave food, health care and recreation. The proposed officers would focus on complaints. They would also help protect the rights of senior citizens.

As a result, older people would have district-level support. The minister said the move would make help easier to reach. Lakshman Kumar said the state would continue its work for the elderly. He also stressed dignity, care and financial security.
