Hyderabad: Telangana RTC has not installed CCTV cameras in its regular buses and currently provides the surveillance system only in premium and electric buses, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said in the Assembly on Thursday.
The minister gave the clarification during Question Hour on the fourth day of the Telangana Assembly session. He said the Automotive Industry Standard 153 (AIS-153) did not make CCTV cameras mandatory in buses.
Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender raised the issue of surveillance cameras on RTC buses. He recalled that the corporation had previously received proposals to introduce CCTV systems.
Nagender asked whether the government had any plans to install cameras in buses operating on remote routes and those connecting distant villages. He raised the issue during questions on RTC services.

The MLA also referred to the heavy rush expected during the Ganesh Navratri celebrations. He said around 50 lakh to 60 lakh devotees were expected to visit the Khairatabad Maha Ganapathi.
Nagender thanked the RTC management for operating special buses from different parts of Hyderabad. The additional services aimed to help devotees reach the festival venue amid the expected crowds.
The minister also acknowledged in the Assembly that the RTC was giving its lands to the government. He reiterated the position during the proceedings.
For now, regular RTC buses do not have the CCTV surveillance system mentioned in the Assembly discussion. Premium and electric buses operated by the corporation have the facility.
