No Ebola cases in Telangana, says Health Minister

Hyderabad: Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha on Tuesday said no Ebola cases were reported in the state so far. He also stated that authorities had not identified any person with Ebola symptoms in Telangana.

The minister said there was no need for public panic and assured that the government was maintaining strict vigilance. He reviewed preparedness measures and preventive steps following Ebola outbreaks reported in some African countries.

The review meeting took place at the Aarogyasri Trust office in Hyderabad. Health Department Principal Secretary Christina Z. Chongthu, Public Health Director Ravinder Naik, Medical Education Director Narendra Kumar and other senior officials attended the meeting.

Officials informed the minister that the state followed all precautionary measures issued by the Central government.

Ebola cases under close monitoring in Telangana

Officials said teams were screening passengers arriving from Ebola-affected countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad. Authorities conducted thermal screening and medical checks for incoming passengers.

Officials also deployed special teams comprising doctors, health inspectors, field staff and paramedical personnel at the airport. The department kept 108 ambulances on standby round the clock for emergency situations.

Officials said Gandhi Hospital established a special 10-bed isolation ward for suspected cases. Authorities appointed General Medicine HOD Dr Sunil Kumar as the nodal officer for Ebola monitoring. Officials said they would send suspected samples to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing.

According to officials, travellers arriving from Ebola-affected countries without symptoms were staying under 21-day home isolation. District surveillance teams continued monitoring such passengers regularly.

Officials informed the minister that 58 passengers arrived in Hyderabad from Ebola-affected countries till May 25. However, none of them showed Ebola symptoms. Authorities classified all of them under Category-I and placed them under home isolation.

The minister directed officials to continue strict monitoring without negligence. He instructed authorities to shift any suspected patient immediately to the isolation ward at Gandhi Hospital.

Damodar Rajanarsimha also directed government hospitals to remain alert and strictly follow infection control protocols. He stressed the need for strong coordination between airport officials, district surveillance teams and hospitals.
