Hyderabad: State Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha called for coordinated efforts by the government, medical experts and voluntary organisations to address rising cancer cases in Telangana.
The minister spoke at the silver jubilee celebrations of Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad.
He said changing lifestyles are contributing to the increase in cancer cases.
He also cited dietary habits, environmental pollution and genetic factors as major causes.
According to the minister, Telangana records between 50,000 and 55,000 new cancer cases every year.
Moreover, he said the disease places a significant emotional, social and financial burden on affected families.
Rising cancer cases prompt focus on early detection
Damodar Raja Narasimha said the state government has introduced several measures to strengthen cancer prevention and treatment.
For instance, the government declared cancer a notifiable disease.
It also established a State Cancer Registry and a dedicated cancer portal.
Meanwhile, the government is focusing on awareness campaigns and early detection programmes.
The minister added that eligible patients are receiving free and subsidised treatment through Arogyasri.
These services are available in government hospitals and empanelled private hospitals.
The government aims to ensure that no family falls into poverty because of cancer treatment costs, he said.
He also congratulated Basavatarakam Hospital for completing 25 years of service in cancer care.
Further, he praised hospital chairman Nandamuri Balakrishna for carrying forward the vision of N.T. Rama Rao.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced plans to establish a 1,000-bed Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital in Amaravati.
He said the new facility will expand access to specialised cancer treatment in Andhra Pradesh.
According to the minister, Andhra Pradesh records around 40,000 new cancer cases every year.
In addition, he said the state has strengthened cancer care infrastructure in recent years.
The government completed the Guntur State Cancer Centre and developed facilities in Kadapa and Visakhapatnam.
Furthermore, Satya Kumar Yadav said awareness campaigns and free screening programmes are improving cancer detection.
He added that digital health initiatives are supporting treatment and monitoring efforts across the state.
