Hyderabad: Police took a woman into custody after a man alleged that she collected about Rs 10 lakh from him after promising marriage and later backed out. The complainant, Venkata Prasad Reddy of Vempalli, approached police after he realised that the woman had allegedly deceived him.
Police registered a marriage fraud case and began an investigation. They subsequently took the woman, identified as Esther Rani of Kadapa, into custody for questioning. According to the complaint, Esther Rani worked in the Veterinary Department at Pulivendula.
Prasad had reportedly met her about two years ago. Their acquaintance later developed into a relationship. Prasad alleged that Esther Rani promised to marry him and gained his trust.
Over time, she allegedly collected up to Rs 10 lakh from him on different occasions. The couple later travelled to Hyderabad to shop for clothes ahead of their proposed marriage, according to the account.
Prasad believed that they would marry at Gandi Kshetram the following morning. However, Esther Rani allegedly changed her position before the planned wedding.
She reportedly told Prasad that her mother had threatened to die if she married him. Subsequently, she switched off her phone. Prasad then suspected that she had deceived him. Therefore, he approached police and lodged a complaint.
Marriage fraud case involves alleged Rs 10 lakh payment
Police registered a case based on Prasad’s complaint and started an investigation. As part of the inquiry, officers took Esther Rani into custody. Investigators were examining Prasad’s allegations about the marriage promise and the money he claimed to have given her.
Information that emerged during the inquiry also indicated that Esther Rani had reportedly married twice earlier. However, police continued to verify the circumstances and other details connected with those reported marriages.
The investigation also covered the alleged financial transactions between Prasad and Esther Rani. Police continued questioning her to establish the sequence of events during their two-year acquaintance.
The marriage fraud case remained under investigation, while authorities examined the complainant’s allegation that she obtained about Rs 10 lakh after promising to marry him.
