Telangana gig workers law gets Governor’s approval

Hyderabad: The Telangana gig workers law received Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla’s approval and cleared the way for legal protection and welfare measures for delivery workers and cab drivers across the state.

The state government enacted the “Telangana Platform Based Gig Workers (Protection of Labour and Regulation of Employment) Act, 2026” ahead of May Day celebrations.

As a result, Telangana became the second state after Rajasthan to introduce a dedicated law for platform-based workers.

Officials said the government will release the gazette notification for the legislation on Friday. Meanwhile, worker unions welcomed the decision and thanked the government for introducing the law.

The law covers workers associated with platforms such as Uber, Ola, Swiggy, and Zomato.

Under the legislation, the government made accident insurance, health insurance, and pension support mandatory for workers and their families. In addition, the law provides minimum wages and labour protection measures.

Officials said platform companies cannot remove workers from service without valid reasons. Moreover, the legislation includes provisions related to gratuity and contract protection.

According to estimates, nearly 4.5 lakh workers across Telangana will benefit directly from the new law.

The government will also release detailed implementation guidelines within the next 10 to 15 days.
