Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP condemned the Ramchander Rao arrest and detention of several party leaders on Tuesday. The party accused the Congress government of curbing democratic protests and preventing the BJP from raising issues against its administration.
Police took Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao into custody at his Tarnaka residence. He was preparing to travel to Nalgonda to meet BJP district president N. Varshith Reddy.
According to the BJP, Congress workers had allegedly ransacked Varshith Reddy’s residence on Monday. Police took Ramchander Rao to Gandhi Nagar Police Station after detaining him.
At the police station, Rao alleged that “democracy is under threat in Telangana.” He also claimed that police had placed him under house arrest for the second time within a week.
Earlier, police had stopped Rao from travelling to Ramanthpur. He had planned to meet polytechnic students who were holding a protest.
Ramchander Rao arrest followed by detention of BJP leaders
Following the Ramchander Rao arrest, other senior BJP leaders also faced detention. BJP Legislative Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, MLC C. Anji Reddy, State vice-president and former mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and party general secretary T. Veerender Goud were taken into custody.
The leaders were detained when they attempted to travel to Nalgonda. They planned to meet the district BJP president following the alleged attack on his residence.
Earlier, Maheshwar Reddy released a BJP chargesheet covering the Congress government’s 1,000 days in office. The party titled the document “1,000 lies and 1,000 betrayals”.
The BJP alleged that the Congress government had failed to fulfil its six guarantees and 420 promises. It also accused the administration of financial mismanagement and administrative paralysis.
The party further alleged that crime had increased in the State. It cited incidents in Shamshabad and Patancheru while raising concerns over law and order.
The BJP also alleged that women and the general public faced growing safety concerns. The party continued its criticism of the government following the detention of its leaders.
The BJP maintained that the arrests prevented its leaders from highlighting alleged failures of the Congress government.
