Telangana begins Albendazole distribution for 96.82 lakh children

Hyderabad: Telangana on Monday began Albendazole distribution for 96.82 lakh children aged between one and 19 years under the National Deworming Programme. Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha launched the statewide campaign at Raj Bhavan Government High School in Hyderabad.

The Minister inaugurated the programme by administering Albendazole tablets to students. Meanwhile, he appealed to parents to ensure that every eligible child received the tablet.

Rajanarasimha said intestinal worm infections could cause anaemia, malnutrition, stunted growth and weight loss. Moreover, he said such infections could affect children’s health and academic performance even when symptoms were not immediately visible.

Therefore, he urged parents to support the campaign being conducted in government and private schools, junior colleges and Anganwadi centres across the state.

Albendazole distribution targets children across Telangana

The Minister said deworming eliminated intestinal worms, improved nutrient absorption and strengthened immunity. Further, he said the programme would improve children’s concentration and learning ability.

He directed Health Department officials to create awareness about personal and environmental hygiene. Additionally, officials will educate children and parents about washing hands with soap, drinking safe water and cleaning fruits and vegetables before consumption.

The Health Department is implementing the programme in coordination with the Education Department and the Women and Child Welfare Department. Also, government and private schools, junior colleges and Anganwadi centres are participating in the campaign.

A total of 96,81,855 children and students between one and 19 years of age will receive Albendazole tablets across Telangana. Meanwhile, children who miss the scheduled distribution will receive the tablet during a mop-up round on July 20.

MLA Danam Nagender, MLC Addanki Dayakar, Health Department Principal Secretary Dr Christina Z. Chongthu, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Dr Sangeetha Satyanarayana, Hyderabad DMHO Dr P. Srinivas and other officials attended the launch.
