Paddy cultivation likely to decline in Rabi season, says Tummala

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has predicted a decline in paddy cultivation during the upcoming Yasangi (Rabi) season. He directed officials to prepare measures to prevent fodder shortages amid concerns over El Nino.

During a review meeting in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Tummala assessed the State’s agricultural preparedness for potential El Nino impacts. He stressed the need to preserve paddy crop residue for animal fodder rather than burn it.

The Minister asked officials to procure Kharif fodder if necessary. He also directed district collectors to ensure adequate fodder supplies across their districts.

Tummala highlighted digital agriculture as a government priority, particularly the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite technology. Meanwhile, discussions with German representatives had explored digital technologies for agricultural applications.

Paddy cultivation decline prompts digital farming measures

The government was using satellite data to assess soil nutrient levels, the Minister said. It planned to provide soil nutrient information to 70 lakh farmers simultaneously. Comprehensive guidance on fertiliser use could also become available every 12 days.

Tummala urged farmers to avoid excessive fertiliser and pesticide use. He directed officials to promote balanced fertiliser application and stressed the need to scientifically verify the accuracy and reliability of emerging technologies.

The Minister also called for coordination with scientists from agricultural universities. He said digital agriculture could help protect soil health and reduce cultivation costs.

In addition, officials reviewed the expansion of oil palm cultivation during the meeting. Discussions also covered farm mechanisation and warehouse construction as part of the State’s agricultural preparedness.
