Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced that the Telangana government had prepared plans to transform Hyderabad into a traffic-free city through a network of underpasses, elevated corridors and surface roads.

Addressing the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Affairs and Housing at the Secretariat on Saturday, Revanth Reddy said the government would also develop multi-level parking facilities and strengthen multi-modal transport systems to reduce traffic congestion.

The meeting was attended by Standing Committee Chairperson M Srinivas Reddy, Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy and other members.

Revanth Reddy said widening roads alone would not solve Hyderabad’s traffic problems. Therefore, the government adopted a multi-pronged strategy to improve transportation infrastructure across the city.

“To address parking challenges, we are establishing multi-level parking facilities across the city. We are striving to transform Hyderabad into a traffic-free city,” he said.

Hyderabad traffic-free city plan focuses on multi-modal transport

The Chief Minister said rapid urbanisation was creating new challenges for Hyderabad. Consequently, the government was focusing on infrastructure development that matched future urban demands.

He explained that the government had categorised Telangana into three economic zones under the CURE, PURE and RARE model.

According to Revanth Reddy, the area inside the Outer Ring Road would become the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) and serve as a services hub.

The region between the Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road would function as the Peri-Urban Region Economy (PURE) and focus on manufacturing activities.

Further, the Rural Agriculture Region Economy (RARE) beyond the Regional Ring Road would promote agriculture and allied sectors.

The Chief Minister also said the government had unveiled the Telangana Rising 2047 Master Plan for long-term state development.

Hyderabad traffic-free city vision includes pollution control

Revanth Reddy briefed the committee on measures to reduce air pollution and develop the Musi Riverfront while preserving Hyderabad’s cultural identity.

He said the government planned to introduce electric buses into the RTC fleet in Hyderabad. Additionally, authorities would retrofit existing auto-rickshaws within the CURE zone and convert them into electric vehicles free of cost.

Senior officials also presented plans related to Hyderabad’s drinking water supply, Musi River rejuvenation and urban infrastructure through a PowerPoint presentation.

The Chief Minister requested the Parliamentary Standing Committee to seek greater cooperation from the Central Government for Hyderabad’s development projects.

Committee members described the Musi River Rejuvenation Project as a revolutionary initiative and praised the Telangana government for undertaking it.

The committee also appreciated the state government’s measures for women’s empowerment.

Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao and senior officials from the state and Central governments attended the meeting.
