Hyderabad: Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Monday called for greater public participation to preserve and promote the social vision of Mahatma Basaveshwara, stressing the need to adapt his philosophy to changing times.
He said Basaveshwara’s life and ideals should be studied and followed in the present context. He also announced that the state government had established a corporation in Basaveshwara’s honour, while the foundation stone for Basaveshwara Bhavan would be laid soon.
The remarks came during the 893rd birth anniversary celebrations of Basaveshwara, organised by the Backward Classes Welfare Department at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad. Minister Vakiti Srihari attended as chief guest alongside Ponnam Prabhakar.
Basaveshwara social vision highlighted at event
The ministers paid tributes to Basaveshwara and described him as a thinker who promoted equality, social justice and ethical living. Ponnam Prabhakar said both the government and followers must actively support efforts to preserve Basaveshwara’s social vision.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi, he said the spirit of Basaveshwara’s ideals was reflected in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. He added that initiatives would be taken to educate future generations about these principles.
Ponnam Prabhakar said Basaveshwara dedicated his life to eliminating caste discrimination and promoting equality among all people. He noted that the reformer also advocated equal rights for women, with his ideas remaining relevant today.
Basaveshwara social vision rooted in equality
The minister said Basaveshwara’s contribution to marginalised communities remained significant. He identified justice, equality and righteousness as the core principles that continued to guide society.
He urged people to practice these values and work towards building an inclusive society. The minister emphasised that public participation was essential to sustain Basaveshwara’s social vision.
Several leaders and officials attended the programme. Among them were MP Suresh Shetkar, Police Housing Corporation Chairman Gurunath Reddy, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar, BC Corporation Chairman Noothi Srikanth Goud, Fisheries Corporation Chairman Mettu Sai Kumar, and former MP B B Patil.
BC Welfare Department Secretary Balamayadevi and other officials were also present.
