Hyderabad: Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar alleged corruption in Ayodhya Ram Temple donations and demanded that the BJP apologise to the people of the country. He accused the party of collecting donations in the name of Lord Ram and misusing public faith.
Addressing the media on Monday, Ponnam claimed people from across the country had contributed to the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya according to their means. He alleged that corruption involving crores of rupees had taken place in the temple project.
Ayodhya Ram Temple donations spark political row
The minister alleged that BJP leaders collected donations and sought votes in the name of Lord Ram and Akshintalu. He also claimed that the people of Ayodhya recognised the alleged irregularities and defeated the BJP’s MP in the constituency.
Ponnam Prabhakar accused the BJP of using Lord Ram’s name for political gains. He said politics and devotion should remain separate. He also alleged that the party had exploited religious sentiments for electoral benefit.
The minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Uttar Pradesh government should respond to the allegations. He also urged Telangana BJP leaders to clarify their stand on the issue.
Ponnam further alleged that funds collected in the name of Lord Ram had been misused. However, he did not present evidence to support the allegations. He demanded that the BJP apologise to the people of the country if any wrongdoing had occurred.
The minister said he had no objection to Lord Ram or the temple. He added that he had personally participated in religious programmes and initiated free meal services at the Illanthakunta Ramalayam during his tenure as MP.
