Hyderabad: Hyderabad Traffic Police intensified a special enforcement drive against vehicles using fake number plates after receiving an increase in complaints about fraudulent registration plates.
Police registered six criminal cases during the past week against people allegedly using fake, tampered or unauthorised registration plates. Multiple vehicles were also identified and seized during the crackdown, according to a press note issued on Thursday.
Traffic police said the violations contravened the Motor Vehicles Act and other applicable legal provisions. The department alleged that some motorists used fraudulent registration plates to conceal vehicle identities. Such plates were also allegedly used to evade traffic enforcement and violate regulations.
Fake number plates lead to six criminal cases
The six cases were registered at different Law and Order police stations covering Hyderabad and other districts. Cases were booked under Hadnoor Police Station in Sangareddy district and Kalapathar Police Station. Afzalgunj Police Station also registered a case during the enforcement action.
Other cases came under Inthezargunj Police Station in Warangal district and Kamareddy Town Police Station in Kamareddy district. Musheerabad Police Station was also among the jurisdictions where a case was registered.
Traffic police said the enforcement drive targeted vehicles displaying fraudulent or manipulated registration numbers. The department warned that it would maintain zero tolerance towards such violations.
According to police, motorists found using fake number plates could face criminal prosecution. Authorities could also immediately seize vehicles carrying fraudulent registration plates.
Fake number plates crackdown focuses on HSRP compliance
Traffic police also stressed strict compliance with High-Security Registration Plate requirements. Only government-approved HSRP plates were legally permitted, the department said.
Police warned motorists against custom alterations to registration plates. Missing digits and temporary stickers used in place of prescribed registration plates were also illegal, they said.
The department asked vehicle owners to ensure their registration plates complied with prescribed standards. Hyderabad Traffic Police appealed to motorists to follow number plate requirements and other traffic regulations.
The department said proper registration plates supported lawful road use and effective enforcement. They also played a role in public safety and crime prevention.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis said the enforcement campaign would continue. Traffic police planned to conduct the drives across the city in a sustained, systematic and vigorous manner.
The department reiterated that motorists using fake number plates or manipulating legitimate registration plates would face strict legal action.
