Hyderabad: Malkajgiri Police conducted a mega Samskar programme for individuals caught harassing women and girls. The initiative aimed to reform offenders and prevent repeat offences.
Malkajgiri Police Commissioner Sumathi attended the programme organised by She Teams at PMR Garden in Nagole on Friday.
She said the Samskar programme gives offenders an opportunity to recognise their mistakes and correct their behaviour before facing criminal action.
The Commissioner warned that police would register cases against those who repeat such offences despite counselling.
She said a criminal case could affect future employment opportunities. It could also create hurdles for higher education and overseas studies.
Samskar programme focuses on reform and awareness
Sumathi said women are excelling in every field. However, discrimination and harassment continue to persist in society.
Therefore, she urged participants to respect women and make use of the opportunity provided through the Samskar programme to change their behaviour.
Meanwhile, She Teams registered 61 FIRs and detained 760 individuals in the Malkajgiri Commissionerate between January and May 18 this year.
Additionally, police booked 236 petty cases during the same period.
The Commissioner expressed concern that 137 of those apprehended were minors.
Furthermore, She Teams conducted awareness programmes in 406 educational institutions and public places across the commissionerate.
Through these programmes, officials educated more than 53,000 people. The sessions focused on women’s safety, cyber safety, the POCSO Act and responsible social media usage.
Sumathi said awareness initiatives and the Samskar programme play a key role in preventing harassment. She added that such efforts help create safer public spaces for women and girls.
