Praja Palana: Lake Adoption Programme links SHGs with lakes in Cyberabad

Hyderabad: As part of the Praja Palana–Pragati Pranalika initiative, Cyberabad Police have launched the Lake Adoption Programme to connect Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with lakes and strengthen community participation in conservation efforts.

The initiative forms part of the 99 Days Action Plan and aims to improve environmental sustainability while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Under the programme, authorities are mapping SHGs to identified lakes across Cyberabad. This will enable continuous monitoring, stewardship and protection of water bodies.

Additionally, the initiative focuses on improving lake cleanliness, conserving biodiversity and enhancing water quality.

The programme also encourages community ownership in maintaining lakes. At the same time, it seeks to empower women through environmental and economic activities.

Lake Adoption Programme combines conservation and livelihoods

Officials said SHGs will actively participate in planning, monitoring and implementing conservation measures under the Lake Adoption Programme.

Furthermore, the programme explores livelihood opportunities linked to lake ecosystems.

These include plantation and nursery development, fisheries and aquaculture, eco-tourism, handicrafts, local produce and other community-based enterprises.

Authorities said the initiative seeks to transform lakes into valuable environmental and economic assets.

Moreover, the programme integrates conservation efforts with livelihood generation to promote sustainable development.

Officials believe this approach will strengthen local communities while ensuring the long-term protection of urban water bodies.

The Lake Adoption Programme is being implemented under Day 86 of the Praja Palana–Pragati Pranalika action plan across Cyberabad.
