Hyderabad: BRS MLC K. Kavitha alleged that the Telangana government was planning to weaken the public education system and claimed it intended to reduce the number of government schools in the state based on the Education Commission’s recommendations.
In a statement shared on social media, Kavitha alleged that the govt planned to reduce the existing 27,000 govt schools to around 4,000. She claimed the move would amount to the privatisation of education and said the Telangana Rakshana Sena opposed the proposal.
Kavitha further alleged that the government had failed to release funds meant for budget schools. According to her, the delay had affected the functioning of government educational institutions. She also questioned the progress of the proposed Integrated Schools buildings.
Government schools claims fuel political criticism
The BRS leader alleged that the government was encouraging private corporate schools to expand into villages while existing public schools faced uncertainty. She warned that any attempt to shut govt schools would face public opposition.
The Telangana government had not responded to Kavitha’s allegations at the time of publication. The claims made in the social media post could not be independently verified.
