Hyderabad: As part of the Police Flag Day celebrations, the Saifabad Division of the Central Zone Police organised a Blood Donation Camp for Thalassemia patients at Shah Function Plaza on Thursday. The initiative aimed to help those suffering from Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that requires regular transfusions to survive.
A total of 210 donors, including students, civilians, women volunteers, and police personnel, participated enthusiastically in the camp. Students from Tapasya College, ICBM College, and Government Degree College (Khairtabad) took part along with youth groups from Nampally and Khairatabad. In addition, employees from HDFC Bank, DHL, Sriram Life, and IMAX also joined the drive.
Police and citizens join hands for Thalassemia patients
Police officers ACP Sri Sanjay, Sri Venkat Reddy (SHO Khairatabad), Sri Narayan Reddy (SHO Nampally), Sri Saidulu (DI Khairatabad), SIs, and staff from the Saifabad Division actively participated in the noble cause. Their involvement inspired more citizens to come forward.
Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society Chairman Sri Chandrakanth explained that the disorder demands a steady supply of safe blood, as patients need transfusions every 15 days. He appreciated the Hyderabad Police for their consistent support and commitment to humanitarian causes.
DCP calls for awareness and preventive health measures
DCP Central Zone Smt. Shilpavalli, IPS, noted that Thalassemia is preventable through proper awareness and timely premarital screening. She pointed out that when both partners are Thalassemia Minor carriers, their child has a 25% risk of being born with Thalassemia Major. Therefore, promoting genetic counselling and discouraging marriages between carriers are vital steps to control the disorder.
Furthermore, she urged the public—particularly the youth—to donate blood regularly and participate in awareness drives. Such collective efforts, she said, can prevent Thalassemia and save countless lives.
Finally, the event concluded with appreciation for ACP Sri Sanjay and the organising team. Under the direction of CP Hyderabad Sri V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, the Central Zone Police reaffirmed their commitment to continuing community service programs in the future.
