Harish Rao condemns Prashanth Reddy house arrest over protest

Hyderabad: BRS leader T. Harish Rao on Wednesday condemned the Prashanth Reddy house arrest, alleging that the Telangana government had suppressed a peaceful democratic protest.

Former minister and BRS MLA Bajireddy Govardhan’s successor, former minister and MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy, planned to launch a hunger strike at his residence in Velpur, Nizamabad district, demanding the completion of pending development works in Bhimgal. However, police prevented the protest and confined him to his residence.

Prashanth Reddy house arrest sparks BRS criticism

Reacting on X, Harish Rao alleged that preventing a peaceful hunger strike reflected the Revanth Reddy government’s “anti-democratic” functioning. Moreover, he said Prashanth Reddy intended to highlight public issues, including the development of Bhimgal Municipality, construction of a 100-bed hospital and revival of the RTC depot.

Harish Rao alleged that the government routinely restrained opposition leaders while claiming to run a people’s government. He also accused the Congress government of suppressing opposition voices through police action.

Furthermore, Harish Rao claimed that people would respond to what he described as the government’s authoritarian approach. He demanded that the government stop what he called repressive measures against opposition leaders raising public issues.

BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao also criticised the police action. He described the decision to prevent the peaceful protest as unacceptable. Additionally, KTR alleged that suppressing the opposition had become the Congress government’s objective. He demanded that police immediately withdraw the Prashanth Reddy house arrest and allow the proposed hunger strike.
