Hyderabad: BRS leader Harish Rao wrote a letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy opposing the proposed Singareni power deal with Rajasthan. He questioned the decision to supply 800 MW generated at the Singareni Jaipur power plant to Rajasthan.
In the Harish Rao letter, he alleged that the move amounted to an anti-people decision. He questioned why Telangana should send low-cost power generated using the state’s coal, water and land to another state.
Rao said farmers in Telangana were already facing power-related difficulties. He questioned how the government could commit electricity to Rajasthan while farmers in the state struggled with inadequate supply.
He strongly opposed the joint venture agreement linked to the proposed power arrangement. Rao also questioned the government’s handling of the state’s electricity sector.
The former minister compared the decision to neglecting one’s own family while providing benefits elsewhere. He alleged that the government was unable to ensure adequate power supply in Telangana while committing electricity to Rajasthan.
Harish Rao letter raises concerns over Singareni investment
Rao questioned the decision to divert nearly Rs 22,000 crore of investment from Singareni towards Rajasthan’s development. He also alleged that the Congress government had failed to provide the promised 24-hour power supply to farmers.
He claimed that farmers were sometimes receiving only seven to eight hours of electricity. Rao questioned the government’s decision to attribute power shortages to El Nino.
The BRS leader also blamed the government for problems at power plants built during the previous administration. He alleged that Yadadri Thermal Power Station required G10 and G11 grade coal but was receiving inferior G13 and G14 grade coal.
Rao further alleged that an artificial coal shortage had halted generation at the 800 MW Kothagudem and 540 MW Bhadradri power plants. He also accused the government of failing to maintain adequate coal stocks at thermal power stations.
According to Rao, BRS leaders faced police restrictions when they attempted to inspect the power plants. He described the action as evidence of the government’s alleged authoritarian approach.
Rao also questioned the government’s decision to reject 1,600 MW of power offered by NTPC without an additional burden on Telangana. He demanded an immediate Power Purchase Agreement for electricity Telangana was entitled to receive from NTPC under the state’s bifurcation assurances.
Rao demanded the immediate cancellation of the Rajasthan power agreement. He warned that the BRS would launch a major agitation on behalf of farmers if the government did not withdraw the agreement.
