Hyderabad: BJP Mahabubnagar MP DK Aruna urged the Telangana government to release Jurala canal water immediately to protect crops in the project ayacut. She said farmers were struggling as their crops faced drying conditions.
Aruna criticised the decision to stop canal supplies by citing the approaching summer. She said the Jurala reservoir currently had adequate water storage.
Moreover, Aruna said the Krishna river could still receive further inflows. She argued that the available water should help protect standing crops.
She also suggested that the government could seek water from Karnataka if drinking water shortages emerged during summer. According to Aruna, the Congress government could take up the matter with Karnataka since the neighbouring state also had a Congress government.
Jurala canal water demand gains BJP support
Meanwhile, Aruna said the BJP would fully support farmers protesting near the Jurala dam road and outside the Collectorate. She assured farmers that the party would stand with their agitation.
Aruna said she had spoken by phone with Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy about the severity of the water shortage. During the conversation, she urged the minister to release water into the canals.
The BJP MP said the release would help farmers protect crops already under cultivation. At the same time, she appealed to farmers to use the available water carefully.
Aruna maintained that authorities should take steps to ensure that standing crops reached harvest. She reiterated her demand for immediate action on canal water supplies in the Jurala ayacut.
The BJP MP also called for responsible use of the available water by farmers as the government considers the irrigation requirements of the region.
