Hyderabad: A BRS call to lay siege to the Jurala Project over irrigation water triggered tension across the combined Mahabubnagar district. The party demanded immediate release of water to farmers under the project ayacut.
To prevent law and order problems, police launched preventive arrests across the district. As part of the operation, officials detained former minister and senior BRS leader Niranjan Reddy at his residence in Wanaparthy.
At the same time, intelligence personnel were deployed near the residences of former BRS MLAs and public representatives. They monitored the leaders’ movements amid the proposed protest.
Meanwhile, police deployed security forces around the Jurala dam and nearby areas. They also conducted vehicle checks on roads leading towards the project.
Jurala irrigation water demand prompts tighter security
In particular, police stopped BRS leaders and workers from Wanaparthy, Atmakur, Amarchinta and Narva mandals from moving towards the project. The checks covered routes used by protesters heading towards Jurala.
Meanwhile, tension also emerged in Gadwal over demands for water release into irrigation canals. An all-party group and farmers’ organisations had called for a siege of the district Collectorate.
Consequently, police took several leaders into preventive custody in Gadwal. The action followed demands for water to be released into the canals.
Across the district, police maintained tight security around locations linked to the proposed protests. In addition, authorities continued monitoring movements near the project.
As a result, the Jurala Project area remained under heightened security. Police restrictions and preventive detentions continued amid the BRS call for the agitation.
