Police martyrs’ sacrifices helped maintain law and order: DGP Anand

Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand said police martyrs’ sacrifices had helped maintain law and order and enabled development across the state.

Addressing Police Martyrs’ Day commemorations at Goshamahal Stadium, Anand paid tributes to personnel who died while combating terrorism, Naxalism, Maoism and other anti-social forces. He said their sacrifices had strengthened public security and contributed to the state’s development.

The DGP recalled the dangers police personnel faced during operations involving landmine explosions, firing and other violent attacks. He referred to the deaths of 126 police personnel in 1997, when he served as Superintendent of Police in Nizamabad.

Police martyrs’ sacrifices recalled at Goshamahal

Anand said 154 police personnel had lost their lives in the line of duty across India during the year. Among them were Telangana Assistant Sub-Inspector Dev Singh and constables Empalli Pramod Kumar and Seelam Karunakar.

He paid homage to the fallen personnel and acknowledged the risks faced by police officers while protecting public safety. Meanwhile, Anand said the government had prioritised welfare measures for the families of police martyrs.

These included timely payment of ex-gratia assistance and other benefits available to bereaved families. The DGP said approximately 350 students were studying at the Young India Police School (YIPS).

He also referred to the proposed permanent school campus at Manchirevu, which authorities expected to complete by next April. According to Anand, the new campus would increase the school’s student capacity to 720. He highlighted the importance of educational facilities and welfare support for police families.

DGP identifies emerging policing challenges

Anand identified drug trafficking, cybercrime, food adulteration, road accidents and organised crime as major challenges requiring sustained police attention. He stressed the need for continuous training to address changing crime patterns and strengthen policing at the grassroots level.

In this context, he cited the work of the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau, Eagle Force, T-MARS and Telangana Food Safety Department. He said these agencies played important roles in addressing emerging threats and protecting public safety.

The DGP also highlighted the responsibility carried by personnel serving in the police force. According to him, only 0.3 per cent of Telangana’s population received the opportunity to serve in uniform.

Therefore, he urged officers and staff to perform their duties with honesty, commitment and a service-oriented approach. Anand said effective enforcement of the law and dedicated public service constituted the best tribute to fallen police personnel.
