Hyderabad: A major Hyderabad policing overhaul is underway in response to the latest reorganisation of GHMC wards. Changes are being planned across all three commissionerates – Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda – to align policing units with newly redrawn civic boundaries. The restructuring will reduce the number of police zones and redefine jurisdiction based on population density and crime trends.
Following directions from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, senior police and civic officials have conducted several rounds of reviews. These included Home Secretary CV Anand, DGP Ravi Gupta, and Commissioners V.C. Sajjanar, Sudheer Babu, and Avinash Mohanty. Together with GHMC top officials, they discussed proposals over multiple meetings, including a detailed review on Sunday.
The new plan aims to convert GHMC circles into police divisions and GHMC zones into full police zones. Multiple smaller wards may be grouped into a single policing range to improve operational efficiency and resource deployment.
GHMC-based zones, renamed units, and merging stations
The number of police zones across the three commissionerates is set to reduce from 16 to 12. Hyderabad will have 6 zones, down from 7. Cyberabad and Rachakonda will each have 3 zones, reduced from 5 and 4 respectively. Specific zones such as Charminar, Golkonda, Khairatabad, Rajendranagar, Shamshabad, and Secunderabad will fall under the revised Hyderabad Commissionerate structure.
In Rachakonda, the existing Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri zone is expected to be delinked from the commissionerate and restructured under the district SP’s office. Meanwhile, a new zone may be created in Cyberabad, covering Shadnagar and other areas beyond the Outer Ring Road. For now, these areas will remain under Cyberabad, but may later be merged with a future policing unit for peripheral regions.
As per the current proposal, the final map will have 12 police zones matching the number of GHMC zones. Other than reshuffling jurisdictions, the government is also considering renaming the Rachakonda Commissionerate. Names under review include Laskar, Mahankali, and Secunderabad.
Realignments will not stop at the zonal levels. Specific police stations from Secunderabad located across Tank Bund may be shifted from the Hyderabad Commissionerate to the Rachakonda. At the same time, key locations such as Shamshabad airport and surrounding police stations – including Rajendranagar, Attapur, Adibatla, Pahadisharif, and Balapur – are expected to move into Hyderabad Commissionerate limits.
Several police stations in Patancheru, currently under the Sangareddy district, may be merged with Cyberabad. These adjustments are designed to bring policing boundaries in line with current urban realities and ensure quicker law enforcement response. According to officials, the government may issue a formal notification by Monday or Tuesday.
Additionally, the restructuring model used for policing is expected to be extended soon to other government departments. Early reports suggest that similar realignments are being considered for departments like the Water Board, Transco, and GST.
