Congress committed to 42% BC reservations, says Vivek Venkataswamy

Hyderabad: Labour and Employment Minister Dr G. Vivek Venkataswamy on Friday reaffirmed the Congress Government’s commitment to implementing 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) across Telangana. He criticised the Central Government’s stance as anti–Backward Classes and against social justice.

Participating in the BC Bandh organised by the Backward Classes Joint Action Committee (BC JAC), Dr Vivek said the State Government would not retreat from its promise of providing 42% BC reservations in local body elections. He stressed that the Congress administration would continue defending BC rights despite any legal or political hurdles.

During the protest, Dr. Vivek toured Chennur, Mandamarri, and Mancherial, joining rallies with BC leaders and Congress supporters. He said the Congress Party had always stood by the Backward Classes and other marginalised groups, working for their empowerment and fair representation.

Dr Vivek highlighted two major laws passed earlier this year as proof of the government’s resolve. The Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or Posts in Services under the State) Bill, 2025, reserves 42% for BCs, 15% for SCs, and 10% for STs in education and employment.

He also cited the Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill, 2025, which ensures a 42% BC quota in local elections. These legislations, he said, reflected the Congress Government’s commitment to equitable representation and opportunity.

Praising BC organisations for raising their demands peacefully, Dr Vivek said such unity would strengthen the movement for social justice. He expressed confidence that the government’s efforts would soon lead to real empowerment for BC communities across Telangana.

Dr Vivek further accused the Central Government of ignoring repeated appeals from Telangana regarding BC reservations. He warned that people were watching closely and would respond to any attempts to suppress the rights of Backward Classes.
